Step into the world of calligraphy and immerse yourself in Japanese culture.

Calligraphy was introduced to Japan in the 6th century along with Buddhism, and during the Nara and Heian periods, Japanese nobles studied Chinese calligraphy styles and helped spread the art.

Kanji, the characters used in calligraphy, originated from ancient Chinese picture-writing, and each character carries its own meaning. As a result, calligraphy requires expressions that reflect the meanings of the kanji. Emojis, used worldwide, also originated from Japan's kanji culture. Through this calligraphy experience, you'll not only learn about kanji but also touch upon the linguistic expressions of Japan, the land of "Emoji."

In this experience, you'll learn traditional techniques using brush and ink under the guidance of a skilled calligraphy instructor. By understanding the differences between calligraphy and Western calligraphy, you'll gain insights into the background of Japanese culture.

Tour Details

Introduction to Calligraphy: Learn about the history of Japanese calligraphy and the tools used.

Calligraphy Practice: Practice basic brush techniques and characters using traditional brush and ink.

Instructor's Demonstration: Observe a live demonstration by the instructor.

Calligraphy Creation: Create your own calligraphy work to take home as a souvenir. You'll also learn about the deeper meanings behind the characters you write.

No prior experience is necessary. The instructor will provide careful guidance, so beginners are welcome. Experience the essence of Japanese tradition and discover a new appreciation for this elegant art form.

*It should be within 30 minutes by train from Shibuya Station. The exact location will be provided after confirmation.

Number of Participants: You can participate with a minimum of 2 persons in a group and a maximum of 6 participants.

Tour Fee: The cost of the tour is 15,000yen per person.

There will be no interpreter accompanying this tour. The calligrapher will communicate in English.

Since ink will be used, we recommend wearing clothes that you don't mind getting dirty (such as dark-colored clothing).
