Nikko is about two hours from Tokyo by train and is one of Japan’s most iconic travel destinations. Home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the area is also known for its breathtaking mountains, waterfalls, and historic temples and shrines. At the foot of this rich natural landscape lies Katayama Sake Brewery, founded in 1880 and renowned for its commitment to traditional craftsmanship.

The brewery uses "Senryo-sui," pristine spring water from the Nikko mountain range, top-grade “Yamada Nishiki” sake rice, and a unique yeast developed in Tochigi Prefecture. Every step of the brewing process is carried out with heartfelt dedication. One of the brewery’s hallmarks is its use of the traditional Sase-style pressing method, where sake is gently extracted from cloth bags of fermented mash, resulting in a delicate and smooth flavor.

During the tour, guests can explore the brewery, learn about the intricate art of sake-making, and enjoy tastings of freshly brewed, unpasteurized sake. It’s a truly immersive experience that allows you to engage all five senses with the traditions and natural blessings of Japan.
