[World Heritage] Kumano Kodo Trekking Tour
[World Heritage] Kumano Kodo Trekking Tour
Duration: 5 hours
It is said that tourism in Japan began with pilgrimages, and among them, the Kumano Pilgrimage is considered one of the oldest. Kumano has long been regarded as a sacred land where deities reside, attracting countless pilgrims throughout history. It was believed that visiting Kumano would bring blessings and happiness in the afterlife.
On this tour, a local guide will take you on a journey through three must-see sites, all part of the rare UNESCO World Heritage designation for pilgrimage routes:
- Nachi Falls – one of Japan’s most famous waterfalls
- Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine – an important Shinto shrine
- Seiganto-ji Temple – a historic Buddhist temple
One of the highlights of the trek is Daimonzaka, a scenic cobblestone path that has been traveled for over 1,000 years. It is one of the most beloved sections of the ancient Kumano Kodo trails.
Along the way, you’ll pass through a mystical landscape of towering 800-year-old sacred cedar trees, cypress forests, and beautifully laid stone pathways designed to protect the trail from rain. Walking this sacred route offers a truly unique and spiritual experience unlike any other tourist destination.
