[World Heritage] Sado Island 1-Day Highlight Tour
[World Heritage] Sado Island 1-Day Highlight Tour
Duration: 8 hours
The "Sado Gold Mine," designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024, is the highlight of this full-day tour, allowing visitors to fully experience the history and culture of Sado Island. In the morning, the tour visits the *Historic Site Sado Gold Mine*, where a guide provides clear explanations of the Edo-period mining process and history. Visitors can also experience life in those days through life-sized figures depicting miners at work. After that, the tour moves to the *Kitazawa Flotation Plant*, where gold and silver were once extracted from rock. The ivy-covered ruins have gained popularity for their resemblance to Studio Ghibli’s *Castle in the Sky*. In the afternoon, enjoy Sado’s gourmet offerings and hands-on experiences. At a long-established sake brewery, taste locally brewed sake, which is highly rated nationwide. Then, take a ride on a *tarai-bune* (tub boat), a traditional vessel once used in the region for fishing, and get up close to the crystal-clear blue waters. This boat is also said to have inspired the design of a vessel in Studio Ghibli’s *Spirited Away*. Finally, stroll through the historic port town of *Shukunegi*, guided through streets lined with traditional board-clad wooden houses that tell the story of Sado’s rich past. A local guide will accompany the tour, offering deep insights into the many charms of Sado Island.
